CHAPTER TEN

The rescue portion of the rescue mission was underway. Kesser’s body vibrated with excitement. And fear. She was no longer a support player. She and her cyborg were the main participants.

Strike carried her out of the modified freighter. She breathed in, counted to ten, breathed out, breathed in, counted to ten, breathed out. The air was warm and humid and smelled like freshly cut vegetation. That helped to calm her.

Her male set small perimeter alarms around their ship. She balanced on his shoulder and watched for hostiles, as he called them.

The bushes behind him moved. She aimed in that direction. Something hopped out of the greenery. She tapped her triggers.

A cute little furry creature with triangle-shaped ears froze in place.

“The stunning function works on creatures.” She whispered that observation.

Her cyborg’s shoulders shook. He was laughing at her.

His joy eased some of her guilt about stunning the little furry creature.

He ran with her. Strike moved quickly but not at his top speed. He had explained, during their training, that it was possible some Powluks had figured out a way to block life-form scans, similar to how his cloak had rendered that process ineffective. Caution was necessary.

The slower pace allowed Kesser to survey their surroundings. She scanned the terrain with her guns drawn, intent on guarding her cyborg’s back.

As they moved, the devastation wrought on the landscape from battles became more and more extreme. Vegetation was carved away until there was only bare soil and rock left. Debris littered the ground. There were blasted-apart robots and parts of ships and unidentified twisted strips of metal scattered everywhere.

Her planet had been untouched by the war. Powlus Zetus had been changed forever.

She no longer wondered why some Powluks held onto their anger toward the Syndiculs. They lived with the reminder of what her kind had done to them every cursed planet rotation.

Strike twitched his head to the left.

She aimed in that direction, but her cyborg pressed the triggers of his guns before she spotted the male. It was a direct hit. The barest hint of a shoulder frozen in place was visible behind a partially blown-apart engine.

After that, the shooting was continuous. Strike utilized both of his weapons at the same time, shooting in different directions. She shot at anything that moved. Or that she believed moved. She downed some blowing pieces of garbage and a few shadows, but she also stunned three, five, nine Powluk males and one Powluk female.

No children had been detected. Thankfully. She suspected…or hoped…all the younger Powluks had been relocated to a safe location.

The fully mature Powluks would’ve known someone would attempt to rescue the beings they’d abducted. They would likely seek to protect their vulnerable loved ones.

Return fire increased. Strike bobbed and weaved as he stunned beings. Projectiles flew all around Kesser. She pressed her triggers faster, shooting at everything she saw.

Her cyborg violently jerked. She felt the impact of the hit through his form.

“Are you okay?” She kept her gaze on their surroundings.

“I’ll repair.” He jerked again.
